چکیده

We investigate the effective stress-strain behavior of cellular elastomers, structured with a periodic pattern of elliptic holes by means of full scale simulations under small deformations. First, we show that the elastic response behaves non trivially with the pore geometry. In particular, we show that auxetic and anistropic responses arise for a broad range of parameters, when the microstructure becomes sufficiently porous. Second, we show that, in the limit of large and near-circular holes, the stress-strain nonlinearities become very large. Third, we adopt an effective theoretical description where the filaments between the holes are modeled by slender beams to predict the linear response, and by bars and pivots to capture the leading order nonlinear corrections. This approach fully captures the asymptotic observations and open pathways for an effective-beams based homogenization and the design of nonlinear cellular materials. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Nonlinear Dynamic Response of Functionally Graded Porous Plates on Elastic Foundation Subjected to Thermal and Mechanical Loads

In this paper, the first-order shear deformation theory is used to derive theoretical formulations illustrating the nonlinear dynamic response of functionally graded porous plates under thermal and mechanical loadings supported by Pasternak’s model of the elastic foundation. Two types of porosity including evenly distributed porosities (Porosity-I) and unevenly distributed porosities (Porosity-...

Analysis and Approximation of a Strain-limiting Nonlinear Elastic Model

Elastic solids with strain-limiting response to external loading represent an interesting class of material models, capable of describing stress concentration at strains with small magnitude. A theoretical justification of this class of models comes naturally from implicit constitutive theory. We investigate mathematical properties of static deformations for such strain-limiting nonlinear model...

Nonaffine correlations in random elastic media.

Materials characterized by spatially homogeneous elastic moduli undergo affine distortions when subjected to external stress at their boundaries, i.e., their displacements from a uniform reference state grow linearly with position , and their strains are spatially constant. Many materials, including all macroscopically isotropic amorphous ones, have elastic moduli that vary randomly with positi...

Modeling of Compression Curves of Flexible Polyurethane Foam with Variable Density, Chemical Formulations and Strain Rates

Flexible Polyurethane (PU) foam samples with different densities and chemical formulations were tested in quasi-static stress-strain compression tests. The compression tests were performed using the Lloyd LR5K Plus instrument at fixed compression strain rate of 0.033 s-1 and samples were compressed up to 70% compression strains. All foam samples were tested in the foam rise direction and their ...

Particle rearrangement and softening contributions to the nonlinear mechanical response of glasses.

Amorphous materials such as metallic, polymeric, and colloidal glasses exhibit complex preparation-dependent mechanical response to applied shear. In particular, glassy solids yield, with a mechanical response that transitions from elastic to plastic, with increasing shear strain. We perform numerical simulations to investigate the mechanical response of binary Lennard-Jones glasses undergoing ...
